OK well here goes nothing!!,
I'm almost embarrassed to even show my LITTLE deer on here cause everyone knows that the USA has produced some really Big Deer in the past lately Like the Milo Hanson Buck.
But before I show ya my Little Bambie let me tell ya a little story about how I first seen him...>>>" Poor little guy " .
The night was cool & crisp & the frost was in the air, The evening my Hunting partner & good friend "John" came to my house to see if I was ready to head back into the Hunting camp.
He asked me " are ya ready to head out & I told him "yup I'm set to go" So we got into our cars & started heading to the hunt camp a little while later we arrived at the camp and as we passed through the gates I could see a Light on and that a fire was going in the wood stove as smoke poured out of the chimney in the little two room Cabin.
We parked our cars Grabbed our Hunting Gear and made our way through the pitch black Darkness to the front porch.
As we made our way into the cabin we opened the door & there sitting at the table having a smoke was "Jack" John's school Buddy & life long friend.
As we entered the Hunting cabin Jack say hey guys how ya been doing we replied great now that were able to do some deer hunting again.
As we sat at the table Having a few Wobbly Pops & reminiscing on past hunts, The time had just seemed to pass us by all too quickly. & Before we knew it it was time to head up stairs and get some shut eye because 5:30am came awfully early & by this time it was already 1:30am.
Well it seemed like I had just got to sleep when Jack yells
Upstairs & says Breakfast is ready and on the table and to come & get it before it got cold.
so after about a minute or two deciding to get out of a warm bed or not & my belly doing the growling thing as if to say FEED ME NOW SILLY or I'll make all kinds of noise's while your out on your watch!!, I decided to make my way down stairs & get something to eat.
The three of us finished eating, But I still had my coffee & my smoke to finish, So Jack & John Grabbed their gear & out the door they went to head to their watches.
Now Some time during the night it had snowed and we had about 2 or 3 inches of fresh snow on the ground.
Hmmmm Nothing like a good skimpier of snow for tracking deer I thought to my self, Now Jack & John by this time were rushing to get to their watches, So a few minutes later I finished my coffee & smoke got my gear all ready and out the doors I head.
As I stepped outside I took a big breath and I thought to my self "today feels like a good day & should be a good day for hunting!."
So off I go heading down the trail next to the bush and through the Field to head to my watch.
As I get to the edge of the bush along the trail I see all kinds of doe tracks & the odd buck track from the night before but nothing fresh.
After about 15 or 20 minutes I finely reached my watch, I take my cushion and get settled in for the days hunt.
Around 8:30am I hear two shots ring off one after the other in the direction of John's watch, I think to my self did he get it or not?.
several minutes go by & I don't hear any call shots for myself & jack to give him a hand so I stay put on my watch.
Latter on that day around 12:30pm I see Jack & John heading over to my watch when they reached me I asked John was that you doing the shooting??, He replied ya but I missed him I hit a branch in stead of the deer?.
I started to laugh & told him silly ya can't eat branch's
Not in less Ur a beaver that is LOL, We had a good chuckle and off to the cabin we head for lunch.
And after lunch we all head back to our watches again to finish off the rest of the day.
The day came & went and nether I nor Jack seen any deer for the rest of that day, And the only one to get any shooting in that day was John.
When we get back to the little two room cabin we unloaded our rifles and commence to getting out of our hunting gear.
And wouldn't ya know it I look up the Field & there pretty as could be is a nice size Doe & two Bucks.
Well let me tell ya u never seen 3 guys scramble to get their guns loaded as quick as we did that day, I was fumbling to get my shell's back into my rifle and Jack and John were tripping over each other trying to get their shells in their gun's as well at the same time running to the edge of the field so as to get a clear shot off at one of them, And from all the commotion that was going on the deer just stood there grazing like they didn't have a care in the world.
I finely get my rifle loaded and just then I hear KABOOM KABOOM KABOOM!!! so I run over to where they are, Just in time to see the Bucks & the Doe trot off into the bush yup you guessed it they both missed!!.
We went down to where they had gone into the bush and we tracked them for what seemed hours threw thick brush & swamps but they were long gone.
I asked them just how in the heck could you two MISS at that range it's only 250 yards from where you two were standing to where they were? they just looked at me and said we can't under stand it our selfs, Oh well I said there's always tomorrow morning.
Well let me tell ya I ribbed them well into the night about that one ;D, Cause had that been ME they wouldn't have never let me live that one down.
So the next morning we do it all over again Jack & John getting ready to head to their watches as I'm still trying to WOOF down my brecky HEY I say whats the rush it's not even daylight yet .
They tell me we don't have time to wait for U we need to get to our watches we still have a 25 minute walk to get to our watches!!, So out the door they head and again I'm left to fend for my self.
So while I'm trying to get my breakfast into me & finish my coffee I look out the window and see them looking at something in the field I think to my self "I do that quite often lately" LOL
So I think to my self they must be trying to see if the deer came back during the night ?.
After I finished I got ready for the days hunt to begin,
I head out the door for the second days Hunt, And as I reach the edge of the field I start loading my trusty 303.
As I'm heading to my watch about 75 yards into the bush across the trail I'm walking I come across some deer tracks one BIG Buck & two Doe's one Big doe & one small one, They couldn't be any older then about 5 minutes old & dead fresh to boot!!.
So I head in to where they went I followed the tracks into a ceder swamp that was dried up & after about 10 minutes I can see where the one BIG Doe had separated from the BIG Buck & the Other smaller Doe, So I followed the two all the while stopping about every few minutes just to see if I can hear them or not? & To make sure Just where I am & to make sure I wasn't on our nabours property as he hunts right next door to us.
And After following the tracks for what seemed a really long time I come across where they had gone into some really thick stuff, So I stood there thinking to my self should I try and push threw it and take a chance of spooking them out of the area all together, or just head to my watch, So I figured it would be better if I just left them alone & see if they come back threw.
So I worked my way back out to the trail & off to my watch I go to begin my days hunt.
I reach my watch and get settled in for the hunt I sat there for hours watching & listening, But all I could hear was the brook running next to my watch & these little fox squirrel's chattering at me all morning long scampering back & forth along the branches of the tree I was sitting next to, Man If they only Knew how close they came to getting popped by my 303 ;D, But I thought NO better not just in case a deer sticks their head out into the open??.
Around about 12:30pm just like clock work here comes Jack & John, They had asked me if I had seen anything? And I had informed them I had came across some fresh tracks on my way into my watch so I took them to where I had seen the tracks.
At that point they informed me they hadn't seen those tracks on their way in to there watches, But had seen some
in the field and a few on their way to their watches.
After Lunch we head back out again this time they inform me that they weren't coming out till dark so I told them OK see ya's when you come out.
They take off & I decide well if they aren't coming out till dark I should grab something to nibble on to tide me over till I get ready to head out of the bush.
So I head back into the cabin and grab some munchies and after stocking up away I go off to my watch.
As I'm heading to my spot I think MAN it would be nice to have seen just how big he really was that morning.
Well the day came & went as it had years before with me just sitting there & no deer in sight any where to be seen,
except for the three we had seen the day before.
So around 5:10pm I decide to head into camp and check on the wood stove, Put some coffee on & turn on the propane lights at dark so they could see the cabin when they came out.
As I reached the edge of the bush and began to enter the open field I noticed the wind was right in my face, I stopped and pondered for a moment whether or not to just sit in the ceder swamp till dark for a bit and maybe I might get the chance to see the deer if they decide to head back through in my direction.
Just then I heard something for a moment there I thought it was my gut acting up & growling, So at this point I'm thinking " NOT NOW YOU IDIOT" what a time for you to act up.
Then a few seconds later I hear it again this time I know it's a deer & NOT ME!!.
I look strait head and about 40 yards a head of me to the left, I see the tall grasses moving back and forth then a few seconds later I can start to see just little bit of his tines from his antlers, Then he calls again for his little girlfriend.
So I slowly bring me 303 Rifle up to my shoulder and wait for him to step out from the tall grasses, It seemed like forever, My heart was pounding & the Adrenalin was rushing threw my vanes.
And as I stood there waiting he steps out from behind the tall grasses and he is " HUGE " , I think OH MAN you better make the first shot count OR he's gone & you will never get a second chance at him.
And as I'm standing there as still as could be, He looks right dead at me and I'm thinking " OH NO I'M BUSTED!! ", But wait a minute!! nope he puts his head back down & a couple seconds later starts his calling again all the while heading right in my direction.
while he's heading my way I'm thinking to my self " PLEASE turn so I can get a clear broad side shot & not a head shot!!", Just then he stops and turns now I have a good shot at him by this time he's now only 20 yards away from me .
I take a deep breath let it half out and settle my sights on his boiler room & I squeeze off my shot KABOOM!!, He jumps what seemed to to be about 4 feet in the air lands on his back then gets back up and HE is Heading strait for ME!! .
At this point I'm trying to rack another shell into the chamber when I get the shell loaded into the barrel he's 5 feet smack dab in front of me & By this time I'm just about ready to change my shorts wondering whether or not if he's going to run right over me!!,
Just then he spots me and " SLAMS ON THE BRAKES " I squeeze the trigger again for a perfect heart shot and NOTHING!! not even a click some how as I was trying to get another shell loaded my hunting glove had caught the safety as I had brought the bolt back.
By the time I got the safety off he was long gone well here I am thinking where did he go to??, Just then I hear a CRASH in the bush well by this time I'm cussing at my self and thinking thats just great now I have a wounded deer to try and find.
so I thought I should wait for a bit & try and calm down and have a smoke until I go & track him hoping he might lay down some where and I might get a second chance at him.
By this time my hands were shaking so bad I had a heck of a time trying to light my cigarette. So after I finished my smoke I started to follow his tracks, And I come to where he had gone into the hardwood bush to my right, So I kept following his tracks & there 25 feet inside the bush was my Deer he had tried to climb up the side of the hill and had dropped right there.
As I walked up to him and as I knelt down beside him I heard him give his last breath, At that moment I ran my hand down his side gave him a few pats and said " Thank You Big guy ".
Now The picture your about to see may be disappointing to some real trophy hunters but here he is any ways. ;D
This is me and my 15point non typical
And here is my 2002,2003,2004 award winning finished mount. ;D
To date this little guy took 1st place at 3 different Big Buck contests and I have won over $490.00 worth of prizes
And he ranks 7th over all of Ontario In the F.R.O.W Record Books, At least from what we can figure out from the last issued books that were out back then. ;D
sorry for being so long winded in my post. LOL
