On Feb,13 07, Indiana DNR will be holding an open hearing to discuss its long time law against using rifles for deer hunting. The new law is proposed that rifles must be able to shoot a hand gun round of .357 or larger. Looks like alot of hoosier will now be able to take their rifles out for deer hunting, even though they can only use handgun rounds I think it is still good since Indiana has few places that shooting the higher powered rifle rounds would be safe.

I think you are misinterpreting the load requirement. It says .357 or larger. Similar requirements are in place across the country and means ANY load larger than

They are putting length restrictions on the cartridge,, they have to be handgun size shells in 357 cal or larger. They have a max cartridge length of 1.625 inches. With there only being 1 real safe place to shoot a regular rifle load I guess this is a happy medium for rifle owners. I just hope some idiot doesn`t try to sneak in a high powered load and end up killing or hurting someone 5 miles aways, the handgun rounds should be plenty sufficient in a rifle for this part of the country, now if we had the vast acreage like the rockies or open prairies I would say bring on the big loads.

We are alllowed to use rifle from mid Lower Peninsula up. Never once heard of an errant over shot hurting anyone. There are just too many obstacles in the way. And besides, a .22 mag will out distance most anything out there!!

You should see some of the expert marksman around here Ted,,lol. I heard 1 guy opening day of shotgun season shoot 5 times right in a row, slugs were pinging around me all over the place. Thats why I have always been a big supporter of the Hunter Education Program and encouraged more adults than kids to go to it.

He's right though, Ted...granted, idiots know NO borders, but we have more than our share around here. Responsible firearms use begins with the owner, and education is KEY. Preaching to the choir here, but there are some that are oblivious to the obvious, so to speak......'slap....

Never think that IN is unique to those "expert" gunners. EVERY state has their share. MI can attest to that. No way in heck you're gonna put 3/4 a million people in the woods all at one time and expect something bad NOT to happen.
