I will second the Northern Mountains of New York. But my favorite place close to home is Smith Point Park in Suffolk County. It is a county park and you have the choice of campground or dry camping on the open beach. It offers some of the best stripe bass fishing and of course where there's bass there's blues. Anyone interested can check out my monthly article from last month on the campgrounds of Suffolk County and the salt water fishing they offer. If you don't know the web site I write for you'll have to email me because I will not mention the name on The Lodge, out of respect to this wonderful and informative forum.
When I was 16 years old I had the experience of going camping cross country in an Apache pop-up with my parents and my sister. We left NY and headed to San Diego. From there we went north to Washington State and seen the King Tut expedition in Seattle. Then we headed East and back to NY. I will repeat that trip again soon, hopefully in the next 5 years or so. But this time we have a 2004 Dodge 2500 Dsl4x4 and a 31 foot TT with a slide. Of course the Apache was great though, it brought my family together and it showed me the GREAT OUTDOORS this Great Nation has to offer. I don't have kids to do this trip with but maybe I can do shorter trips with my nephews, I know it was a trip that lasted a lifetime with memories and gave me a goal that I will fill one day and repeat the trip to see how the Nation has changed.

xtreme- feel free to post a link if you feel it's worthwhile reading. We aren't that uptight here. We feel the quality of the site speaks for itself and have no problem sharing other peoples places as long as it's not a poor attempt at dissuading our members to up and leave us!! I'm sure that's not the case here so post away!!

I like anywhere that I have spot to set up my tent. There is one place here in Tennessee that is a medium to hard hike, but well worth it. Takes about 5 hours to hike there with sight seeing. Longer if you get sore feet. It is called Virgin Falls and is quite a beautiful hike. Plenty of sights to see and smaller falls. The trail runs very close to the Caney Fork river with lots of trout to be caught. The falls are spring fed and come out of the ground, fall 110ft. back into the ground. If ever down in Tenn. and you get a hankering to hike, this is one place to go. Here is a link about it and I have posted a pic of the falls below. Just to let you know, the water is VERY cold to drink, but bring your water purification tabs. www.centennialwilderness.com/vfpw.htm
