I made it out opening afternoon around 3, I wanted to get set up in the stand and give it plenty of time for the woods to get quiet. I chose a bean field that had a tree line around 3 sides and had a creek that separated it from another bean field that was bordered by a big woods. The little nook I positioned myself in had me tucked back in out of sight of everything and left me with 2 good lanes for shooting and could see fairly well in all directions but behind me. The grassy area beside the creek was beaten down with deer tracks and looked like a major crossing so I figured when they used the creek as a hiway I would possibly see some deer. But another hunter came in about 40 min`s behind me and was making alot of racket then in 2 hours changed his stand location 3 times.so at that point I pretty much figured out I would see nothing but stuck it out. As darkness fell I gave up and left the stand, driving home I saw no deer where I usually see them feeding. The temps were in the upper 70`s so I figured with the cool morning the hot afternoon had them tucked away in the shade.

It is starting to cool here abit but not cool enough I guess. As far as the biggen. I am actualy wanting to take a nice spike or fork horn so the meat will be that much better. As nice as a big rack is (on deer that is) you can't eat the horns. ;D ;D ;D with only one deer a year up here I want good meat that the hole family will like.

Well me and bowslap went out to an old favorite of mine yesterday, I saw 1 about 60 yards aways moving through a thicket but couldn`t tell what it was. Then a coyote came in and couldn`t get my bow off the hanger in time to get a shot into it. The old place isn`t what it used to be, the state allowed people to use any counties doe tag back in 94 and in 1 weekend they practicaly wiped out the entire herd, that used to be a great hunting spot but it looks like it never fully recovered. We checked out 2 other places, the state property was a joke. The private land that slap got permission to hunt looked great, can`t wait to get out there and try it.

Sometimes I think the only thing they are managing is to keep the hunters from having deer to hunt.

Well I know I swore off small woods but I talked with a guy on a jobsite and he gave me a so-called HOT TIP about a woods west of Indianapolis that is state owned and suppossedly over run with deer and under hunted. So will be heading out in the morn and check it out and see if the hot tip is hot or cold.

Well I didn`t make it out the hot spot I heard about, slap had to work and I don`t like hunting new woods alone as I can split up and cover more new ground twice as fast. So I decided to hit the woods about 30 min`s from the house around noon. I figured with it being opening day most of the weekend warriors would be done shooting up the place. I got in and hit our old area and was up in the tree and set up by 1:00, I did some buck grunts and hit the doe can a few times and let the woods settle down. I kept hearing movement up on a ridge to my right, so I grabbed the rattle bag hoping for a curiosity call. Well it worked only I didn`t know it did, about 15 mins later I heard a truck door slam out by where I park and then I heard the snort of a lifetime behind me to my left. I whipped around in my stand and saw the 14 pointer I had seen while scouting back when he was still in velvet. He was hauling up the ridge and vanished over the other side. Needless to say I was nearly in tears, his tracks where he wheeled and took off were only 35 yards from my stand, another 10 min`s and he would have been under me then 2 hours later he would have been on the lodge mantle,,LOL. But thats deer huntin, hopefully slap will be able to go check out the new spot in the AM.
