Day One
Oct 1st.
Well, I would say Day one was very successful.
Got in the stand about 6:45, 1/2 hour before legal shooting time.
About 10 til 8 I had a young 6pt come strutting by heading for the beans, once he crossed the tree line I seen there was another deer there with him, it was a doe. The next thing I know he was chasing her through the woods and out of sight.
So I'm thinking that was my excitement for the day. Well about 10 til 9 I look over my right shoulder and see another deer heading for the beans. I stood up and turned around and seen it was another young buck, then another, then two more, and another, and another and finally the last one. 8 total, all bucks, 3 of which I would have put on the wall, and one was real nice, big tall out past the ears rack.
I watched a couple of the smaller ones spar a little, then they broke up and a couple other went to sparing. Finally all 8 went into the beans and I watched them feed for about 20 minutes.
I was keeping my eye on the big guy. Finally they walked back into the woods, a couple of them started to spar again, and the big guy broke them up. They then turned and were heading back my direction. I was thinking, I may get a shot. When they were close enough, I couldn't get a shot off due to the thick brush. I went ahead and drew my bow because they had to turn one of two ways, if they turned the way I had hoped I was going to pop the big guy.
Well as you can imagine, they did not turn the way I wanted. Oh well, it was great fun watching them.
Went back out in the afternoon around 3, sat there until 7:30. Never seen a thing. I think it was just way to hot.
Bottom line, I had a great time. And now I have something to look forward too.

10-8
Got up at 4am to go hunting. Looked outside and it looked like pre-dawn. Stinking full moon.
I haven't had any luck when the moon is full and the sky is clear so decided not to make the hour drive.
Looks more promising this coming weekend.

With the cold we got right now, I'm hoping to get a crack at one of the boys I seen the last time.

10-14-06
Went out this morning. Nice and cold. Seen a total of 4 Does today. All were in a big hurry to get where they were going. They entered the woods at about 25 yards but quickly turned that into 60 before vanishing deeper into the woods.
So it wasn't a total wash out. At least got to see deer.
Yearly total so far is 14 sightings. 0 Harvests. ;D

10-15
Hit the stand about 3:20 this afternoon. About 3 hours later I turned around and there was a Doe staring right at me. I froze and had a stare down for about 3 minutes, finally she turned and walk to a nearby bush, that was enough for me to stand up and grab my bow.
She messed around the brush for about 10 minutes, every so often looking back up at me. Finally she walk away but never from behind the brush so I could get a shot. Oh well, maybe next weekend.
So far, 15 Sightings, 0 Harvests

10-29
Well, hit the woods this morning in search of my birthday buck.
About an hour and a half into my hunt I seen some movement off in the distance. It wasn't long and I could see it was a couple deer coming my way.
So I stand up and take my bow off the hook and attach my release. Here comes a pretty nice buck coming right at me. He got to about 12 yards and veered off on the right hand trail.
As soon as he veered I started to pull back my bow. I struggled a bit from being cold and (old) ;D but got it back, by now he is standing broadside at 7 yards.
Unfortunately, while pulling back, my face mask rode up my face a bit and I was breathing a little too hard and my glasses fogged up and I could not see my sights. (damn) Of course I could not remove them because I kind of had my hands full. ;D
He stood there for over a minute, still broadside, well by now my arms are starting to give out and of course he is looking right at me. Well I had no choice but let down. He watched me let down, then just put his head down and continued to graze and walk into the brush.
So I take my glasses off and put them on my seat and stood there hoping he would step back out. Nope, just wondered off to the bedding ground. Needless to say, by now I am more than a little ticked off, set down, and yup, right on the glasses.
So, now I'm setting there, no buck on the ground and bent glasses in my hand, thinking I should just go back home and get back into the warm bed. ;D But of course I don't.
So, about a half hour later, here comes another buck up the same trail. This one is quite a bit smaller, but I'm still stewing a little and decide I'm going to take this one and call it a day. I stand up, reach to get my bow off the hook and low and behold, I knock the arrow off and it falls to the ground, by now he is about 10 yards in front of me, so I just sit down and watch him. No time to get another arrow from the quiver hanging on another hook. So I just watch him graze around and like the last two, wonder off to the bedding ground.
So, it looks like it just wasn't meant to be today.

That does suck,,but at least you saw some. Better than sitting all day and seeing nothing, besides its that kind of day that fuels us to be more specific in our routines and how we do our hunts. I always try to anylize a crappy day or things that go wrong and correct them later. We still have a long way to go buddy.
