I just got off the phone with my Son and he was telling me about his sucessful elk hunt in Colorado last week. Cris and his friends did a Do It Yourself hunt on the Routt National Forest near Yamapa, CO.. After missing a 350 yard off-hand shot at a really big bull the day before, he shot this 5 by 5 at 40 yards. This is his first one . He was cutting up the backstraps when I called him . Thought I'd share his pic's with you .

Thanx Gents ! I'm really proud of him. He is a Whitetail hunting "nut". And now I think he will be the same with elk hunting. Seems to me like just yesterday when I took him on his first Whitetail hunt when he was just a skinny kid .I was just as excited and proud of his first buck as he was. Yeh, they did everything themselves. Hauled all their camping gear with them and camped out on National Forest land . The Elk license cost him something over $500.00. The Forest land is "landlocked" by private property so they had to pay a "Trespass" fee in order to access the area they hunted on. Don't know what that cost them . Cris's friend had to drive from Pa. and Cris had to drive from Michigan ... 26 hours. No Outfitter, no "Trophy fees " or any of that stuff that turns into big dollars. He butchers all of his own meat. They got over 250 lbs of meat off of that elk. Just the 4 quarters and the backstraps. Left the hide. He is doing a bare skull mount. He's looking for some beetles to do the job, so if anyone out there knows where he can order them let me know.

I haven't been out yet, I did a lot of scouting before bow season opened, but since then my focus was on my elk hunt. I may get out this weekend, but I have a ton of things to do around the house.

Can't wait for my next elk hunt, that was one of the best times I ever had hunting. I was more excited getting this elk than any whitetail I've ever gotten.
