Good luck ! I just got home from a do it yourself archerty hunt out near Woodland Park. Got our butts kicked this year. The Elk were not where they were last year and we spent the week looking for them instead of hunting them. Saw some nice Mulies. First day out I walked into a group of 9 bucks 2 of which were true trophys. I couldn't get closer than 50 yards and finally they just outwalked me.
As far as advice, don't let the terrain scare you. Get out there a couple of days early if possible. The lack of oxygen is much worse than the steep terrain ! Look for dark timber and fresh poop ! Sounds a little crude, but if your not seeing fresh green scat your not in the right place.

I might also ad this... get real familar with shooting your firearm at various distances and hold it steady. Use a stationary object as a prop for your rifle to help you hold it still . GOOD LUCK ! Lookin forward to reading your sucess story with pic's.

I agree ;D. Elk are creatures of habit though they migrate on the same route's all the time you need to figiure out what the cycle is . If they are in one area one day they may not be there the next , but in 3 weeks time they will make a full circile around the mountain and be right back where you found them 3 weeks earlier. The only thing is dont spook them Elk are in the Deer family but they are not like Deer. If you spook a deer he or she may run for a mile and stop, if you spook an Elk he will be clear in the next county, or the next Zipcode. ;D Good Luck to all who Elk hunt it is very hard and very strenious , and exerting on the body, but they are awsome creatures. Plus it wouoldn't be called Hunting if they just jumped in the back of your Rig for a "FREE" ride to your freezer. ::)But it sure would make the packing out a whole lot easier.
