How thick does the ice have to be before you will go out on it? How many days of sub freezing temps do we need to get the Ice to a safe thickness to go on it and fish?
Figured if I was going to give it a shot this year I better start educating myself.

3" minimum if you plan on walking. Always take a spud and jam it in the ice ahead of you when you go out for first ice. This will save you from a very cold and wet experience!! I would sday a good 3-5 days of steady below freezing temps before attempting. The first icve is a great time to fish, but also the most dangerous. Stay away from sewage releases and canals that come out into the lake. They are always thinner near the discharges. Even when you have a lot of ice.
