I just aquired a set of shed I want to use as rattling antlers. This is my first set. What do you all do to the antlers? Do you cut off the brow tines, to give yourself a better handle? How about sanding the burs at the base? Would rounding off the ends of the tines hurt at all, just to take the sharpness out of the point. I have seen some people paint there rattling antlers red or orange. Whats you take on this. I was even thinking camo, just so some yahoo doesn't see me walking out of the woods and see antlers, and you know.... Any advice will be appreciated, thanks, John

After giving myself a couple of scars I took the brow tines off . I would cut them flat to the beam and use a rasp file to smooth it flush. JMO As far as painting them for safety?...not me but I wouldnt use them during gun season then. (I would use a rattle bag during rifle)

I agree with BT,,painting them will deaden the tone,,as crazy as it may seem I think deer can distinguish between sounds as to what is normal and what is not.I think if they don`t have the right tone the deer will run,,the rattlebags even have a very very similar tone to actual antlers.

michihunter had a unique perspective on this subject which I thought was very interesting. I'll see if I can find that thread, if not I'm sure he will come in and refresh everyone on his thoughts.
It was on using antlers from two different deer. Again it was a tone thing.

That was my theory Mike!! If a deer can distinguish tones or not is the ultimate question. And if they can, wouldn't it make sense to use two different antlers?

Yeah, I agreed with your theory, I just couldn't remember where your original thread was. I think it makes perfect sense.

I use a huge set of whitetail horn's to rattle with(yes they are both different horns)from different bucks..... I cut the eye guards off(knuckle eaters )... I also rattle near a small tree and leaves,I beat the tree with the horns and scrape the leaves then bang the horns a few times then just click them, like a pushing match..... Work's most of the time This rattling is not a 100% deal,so don't get mad if it doesn't work all the time
