This weekend I was at my mother in laws place and wanted to find somewhere to hunt. I called a family friend and asked if I could hunt their 10 acres as I had (unsuccessfully) for the past 2 years. They agreed ;D. I showed up Sunday morning about 5 am to quickly scout out a place for me to sit. Finally found a spot to sit and wait for the sun to rise.
It was quiet; really quiet no gobbling going on at all. I thought to myself, that this trip would be unsuccessful, once again. Then I hear a gobble but it was really far away.
Suddenly about 75 yards behind a hen starts going nuts behind me, She is calling like crazy non-stop for about 30 minutes. I thought it was another hunter that was calling way too often. Then I heard at least 3 different gobbles going off. The amount of noise in the woods was incredible, hens, gobbles having a huge party . Then it went quiet except for the odd cluck to the north of me.
I look in front of me and see a turkey going at a good clip about 75 yards away from me followed by a tom, I look up and see 3 more turkeys, these ones are about 50 yards away but not at all interested in the decoys (one jake, one hen) but strutting around anyways. I was guessing they might have taught a lesson by more aggressive toms during the year.
They slowly walked away; I kept calling with my box call every time I could get away with any movement. They gobbled like crazy at every noise I made, but weren't interested in coming back
After about 15 minutes I saw them in a field about 500 yards away (I was on top a hill), there were 7 of them strutting their stuff. I decided to change calls and went to a slate call. That did it they started walking in my direction. I quickly lost them in the woods. About 10 minutes later, I hear some clucking behind me. I slowly turn around and see one, two then 6 turkeys 15 yards behind me. Now what do I do?? I slowly and I mean slowly readjust myself in the chain and bring the gun around. The lead bird was a jake, I waited a bit to see if there were any toms in the group. From what I saw there weren't any toms, they were all jakes. I put my scope on the bird and shot it at 12 yards. The bird went right down and at least 10 other turkeys started to fly off in every direction, scared the **** out of me.
I wasn't planning on shooting a jake but my aunt who was visiting from BC, is married to a native guy, and she wanted turkey feathers. She wanted to present the feathers to her mother in law as a gift so they could use them for some traditional crafts and headdresses. They are in northern BC so turkey feathers are not that common for them. Hopefully, I can post pics of the feathers in use.
Not a bad season considering I have never seen a bearded bird in the previous 2 years of hunting and now I got 2 in 3 days of hunting. I guess I will be videotaping hunts for the rest of the year. Good luck to everyone else out there filling their tags.
