Larry ~ This is what Olebuck and I used to do when scouting for gobblers in North Central Pa. If scouting in an area "cold", we mostly walked the old logging roads that run up or beside the hollows looking for food sources ,strutting openings and roosting trees. We also look for tracks, droppings, feathers in dusting spots and scratchings in the soil around and under mast producing trees. Grape vine areas are turkey magnets. Edges of fields are good locations too. The hens like these open areas where they can take their poults to feed on insects and seeds. I also like to stop every once and a while and use my slate call as a locator . Once a gobbler responds to my call, I shut up and leave the bird alone if the season hasn't started yet. File the location away in my "memory banks " for future reference. Before dusk, find a location on a mountain top or high ridge and listen for roosting birds flying up into the trees. The gobblers like to make noise on their roosts just as the sun sets. The birds will still be there in the morning before the sun rises. IMHO, your ears are the best tools you can use to find birds. Find the hens.... the gobblers will be close by in the spring. Thats how we do it. When the season begins, HUNTING gobblers is another chapter. I'm not a very good turkey killer,( Olebuck does a darn good job at that) but I think I'm a pretty good locator. I'm sure we have some other good tips from fellow Lodge members . Lets hear some guys. Oh, the stories O.B. and I could tell you about some of our scouting trips and hunts !
