I have had a crummy season !! As far as buck hunting goes anyway. But I finally filled my buck tag Monday night.
I decided I was one way or another going to hunt every afternoon at least of our 2 week muzzleloader season. This past weekend was the opener and it sucked.
Yesterday afternoon I left work at 2:30 and headed North. I had decided I was going to hunt some place different than I have or anyone else has hunted this year on this farm. Sunday afternoon I did this and I saw 16 deer with 1 being a little buck. So yesterday I headed out and knew where I was going to go with my climber. But when I got to the tree I had in my head I couldn't climb it. So I went to the back of the woods to where I had an encounter with a nice 9 pointer the last day of early archery season.
I climbed the Black Oak and settled in only to find there was already deer in a corn field to my left. They had no idea I was around so I just watched as it looked like one of them was being ran around by a buck that I had yet to see.
After only about 30 minutes, does 6 of them headed North out of the corn field following the wood line. I then saw a small one antlered buck in the woods below them and was let down thinking this youngster was who was doing the chasing.
All 7 of them finally went out of sight and I was surprised to see another deer walking in the field. He stopped at the edge of the woods and I saw him work an over hanging limb I knew it was another buck. I put the binos on him and saw a nice rack, possible shooter. I dug my VECtor grunter out and after some 3 stooges impressions gave a loud long grunt. He headed right down at an angle into the woods. At about 90 yards I cranked my scope up to 9 and laid the SMACK down on him. (Encore and Powerbelts)
He turned and ran a few yards back up the hill with me trying to watch him and reload. But he was done. He staggered and fell right against the fence that runs through the property.
Not quite a heart stopper but he will do for me this late in the game.
He actually is my first ever buck with a Muzzleloader. Not for any reason other than I am normally done with a bow kill or shot gun kill.
He bout got the best of me when I was loading him alone and my feet slipped out from under me in the truck bed and his G2 punchered my thigh just to the right of a couple of my favorite things...... I left a decent blood trail of my own !
