Took a nice big mature doe on 11/18 with the shotgun. Got to my spot by 5:30. It was in the mid 30's...FINALLY!! After a week of mid 60's to 70 degrees, I knew deer were gonna be moving today. Early in the morning I saw 3 doe that I couldn't get a clean shot at. About 11:30, I catch movement to my left. Deer! 2 does meandering into my area. The lead one was a little bigger, so I settle the scope on her. She is quartering too me at about 45 yards. I keep the scope on her, hoping she will turn. Well she does, and I shoot, she drops on the spot, and proceeds to do the spine shot thing! I crack open the gun, load another shell, and bang...complete miss. I load another shell, and wait for what seems like for ever for her to stop thrashing around. When she does, she is belly facing me. I put one mid chest, and it's over. I hate that it happened that way. I strive for quick, clean kills, and this one took a little longer then I like.
After the first shot, the second doe stops, and is just looking at the doe thrashing around. At the second shot, she never flinched either. After the third shot, she just kept looking at the dead doe. She didn't take off, untill I had walked at least 10 yards to her. I guess gunfire doesn't really spook these state land deer!
Ok. now I have a deer down, and I'm a good hike from my truck. I barely have cell service. I call Scott, and I call my buddy Matt. I ask Matt if he feels like going for a boat ride. He isn't really happy, as he is just getting ready to go out hunting for the afternoon, but he comes and gets me. so, instead of a 4 hour uphill drag, I have a 25 minute downhill drag..SWEET!!!!
Scotty and I bring her to the check-in, and the deer biologist is there. She weighs, and ages her. She weighed in at 117 lbs, field dressed, and aged her at 4 1/2 years! I'll have some pics later on tonight, I have to get them resized.
