I've got a theory about rattling that I'd apreciate some feedback on. Here it is: Deer's senses are relatively unknown for the most part although there are some theories established by biologists. The sense of smell is said to be able to distinguish 20 different smells at a time. The hearing is supposed to be very acute but little else is known. My theory is that it is possible for a deer to distinguish different tones and identify the nature of these sounds to a degree. So with that in mind, I have a plan for the hunt coming up. I will be taking two different sides of antler sheds I have found belonging to small bucks. Ones a medium size forkhorn, and the other is a two point with a sticker. These are relatively small in base diameter and will imitate two young bucks fighting when I rattle. Does this make sense and does anyone feel that I'm on to something here?

So if I'm understanding what you are saying is, if you use sheds from the same deer it wouldn't sound like two buck fighting to another buck because it would be the same tone. But by using two different sheds you would have two different tones which would sound like two different deer fighting. So if your theory on tones is correct, then yes it would make sense to me.
Let me know how that works out. And yes, you just might be onto something. Definately an interesting thought.

Makes sense to me. Should work out for you. As you said, the sheds are smaller in size...so not to scare potential bucks away from a fight.

Looks like the weekend of the 5th or 12th. I talked to the man that offered to set my son and I up and I'm pretty stoked. Seems that there's a couple of 8's and a huge 10 that have been hanging out on a regualr basis. And enough does to basically guarantee some venison for the freezer!!

Sounds like a good time coming. Hope both of you score. I'm rooting for you on the 10pt. Make sure you bring home some stories and hopefully pictures.

Best of luck on those deer Ted. Have you heard of, or use the A-Way Bowgrunter+ ? Very useful to stop that big buck from walking.

I've never tried grunt calls. I may try one this year if I get one and feel comfortable enough with my abilities. As for the 10 pt, I'd prefer that guy go to my son!! I've already got one under my belt, and nothing would make me happier than to see him stick a big one for his first!!

Check out the link to the Bowgrunter. Scroll down until you see the product. I bought the call based on all the great posts I read in the MI Sportsman forums. I have the thread bookmarked. I had already bought the call when I found their web site. I ordered their Programming Trophy Bucks DVD too. An excellent video. Very informative. www.awayhunting.com/awaycatalog/acatalog/index.html
