even with a lantern it's still sometimes hard to see your line at night. what I do is take a small piece of a foam cup about the size of a penny and put a slit in it .(if you pull the line tight and slide the foam down the line with a little pressure the line will cut halfway through it and it will stay on the line.)put it on the line about 2 or 3 inches from your rod tip, you can tell if you're getting a bite even out of the corner of your eye in almost total darkness, the white piece of foam stands out like a full moon and you'll notice it jerking and bouncing when you get a bite pretty easy . if you do alot of cat fishing give it a try and you'll see what I'm talking about

Great tip. I like to use bells or those mini glow sticks on the end of my cat poles.
