Jefferson River Bottom part VIII Tuesday , Oct. 31 2006 Weather : COLD !
Well Gang , do to circumstances beyond my control , this deer hunter didn't even leave the house this morning.
Got up at 4:30 . Had all my gear ready and plenty of time to get back to the cedars an hour before daybreak . Jumped in the ole' Plymouth Scamp PU and the darn thing wouldn't start ! It was 4 degrees out and I had a frozen fuel line.I finally got it running by 10:30, so instead of hunting, I drove into Three Forks to buy a new lower radiator hose for my Jeep Comanche which is supposed to be my "backup" vehicle. Spent two hours installing the hose and refilling the system only to find out that the water pump is shot ! Oh well , at least now "Goldie" the Scamp will get me there tomorrow morning. Filled up the tank, added some ISO dry gas and installed an electric block warmer... She should fire up for me now.
Its off to the Bottom in the morning ! I'm gonna have to switch gears on Friday... going elk hunting .
Ted ~ Those trees look very familar . I love hunting deer in them but by the end of the day I get a throbing tension headache .

Jefferson River Bottom Part IX Wendsday , Nov. 1 , 2006 Weather : damn Cold ! Clear Skys Well , got up this morning at 4:30. It was 1 degree when I left the house. The stars in the sky were beautiful above me as I took that long 2 mile walk back to the cedars. The sun seemed to be beating me before I could get back to a spot that I wanted to hunt this morning. ~ Glad I'm Not A Brass Monkey ! ~ I found a place to sit along the edge of a rather large clearing surrounded by cedars and junipers. From my vantage point , I could see the whole long cedar thicket where I saw those Whitetails on Monday. I stayed out of them and just did the watch thing. Holy Smokes was it ever cold ! Nothing moved from sun up till 8:00 except my chattering teeth and shivering body .I didn't wear the right boots and socks and my feet were like two blocks of ice from sweating on that long walk back there. My glasses frosted over and were worthless along with my binoculars .Thank God my scope didn't frost up. ~ Here They Come ~ At 8:00, I heard some Robins making a racket over near the cedars that I was watching. Whenever I hear Robins when deer hunting I go on extra alert . It wasn't more that a few minutes after hearing the birds that two Whitetail does walked through the clearing from the River and snuck into the cedars and disapeared in them. They were about 75 yards from me... Now I was really shakin ! I kept telling myself "Calm down ", but man was it cold ! A big doe and a fawn showed up about 5 minutes later. Following the same path as the first two . That old doe for some reason I'll never be able to understand "Made me ". Maybe she heard my teeth ! She trotted off into the cedars with the kid in tow snorting all the way. My hopes were starting to lower at that point , so I poured myself a cup of coffee and stuck it out wondering if my day was over or if something might happen if I stay. I finished my coffee, started playing with my hand warmers and re-ajusting my seat . ~ Fire Up The Grill Baby . It's Backstraps Tonight ! ~ At 8:30 it happened. From an opening in the cedars I saw a deer moving around . Then it stepped out into the opening and was walking toward me. It was a buck. Not the big guy , but a fat little 5 pointer. He kept coming closer and I thought " should I or not."...It was cold , I was begining to feel "burned out" from hunting deer for almost 9 straight days. I wanted to start concentrating on elk hunting and I love young deer meat ! I let my 20 gauge make the decision at 75 yards ! The 260 grain Sabot struck him in his left front leg and drilled through both lungs. He never knew what hit him . He turned around like he was going back into the thicket, took two steps and dropped. ~ Thanking The "Man" ~ I gave my Montana 5Point about 10 minutes, then I took "The Walk " over to him . When I got there, I checked him out , and then thanked the Man Upstairs and my late Grandfather in Heaven for sending this nice little buck my way and allowing me the previlage to take him like I've done with all my buck kills over the years . ~ Digital Cameras Suck When cold ~ Before gutting my buck, I wanted to take some nice pic's of him . Got out the camera and the doggone shutter wouldn't work ! Tried warming it up with my hand warmers and still no shutter funtion and then it would turn itself off ! Crap !! Rather than bringing all my gear to the buck, I dragged him over to my spot and then started dressing him out..... I won't tell you where I put my camera to warm it up while the field dressing was taking place, but it worked after I was done with that chore , but only long enough to take 4 photos and then it locked up on me again . When my wife gets home tonight, she wants to take some pic's with me in the photos. ~ Buck Went Down @ 8:30... Home @ 1:30 ~ Man , I'm tired ! I dragged my buck through the cedars to the edge of the feed lot which was just plowed up . I had my deer cart back at my truck, so I hung my jacket on a fence post where the buck was laying. Then I walked the 2 miles back to the truck with the rest of my gear, grabbed the cart and walked back to the buck. ~ The Shortest Distance Between Two Points Is ... ~ A straight line through a freshly plowed field and is at least a half mile long . Advise to all ... Don't do it, take the long way around. This just about killed me ! After slogging , tripping , huffin & puffin and cussin my way through this soft lumpy mess , I had the pivot field(another half mile) the third fallow field and finally on the last streach...some more woods till I got back to the truck . I sure could have used those two Brothers from the "Old Country" to help me today. ~ Sleep Will Come Early ~ For me tonight and I know My last thoughts will be about the wonderful, satisfying and exausting time I had today on the River Bottom . Well Gang , that wraps up my Montana Buck huntin adventures for 2006 . I may try to get a doe out there before season's end . Now its time to switch gears and try my luck at Elk hunting on Friday and then go after a Michigan buck on my way to Pa. at the end of the month. Hope you all enjoyed my log. Here are some pic's .... the one of the Cedars and Junipers is where the 5 pointer walked out to me . He was standing against the thicket beyond the larger trees.

Thanx Larry ~
I had a good feeling last night and this morning when I left too . He isn't the largest buck in the forest and it sure would have been nice to get one of those larger bucks out there, but I'm satisfied all the same. There is always next year to hunt Monsters... I'll have lots of time to get'em patterned for next season.

Here's a couple of pic's my wife took tonight . The old Woolrich that I'm wearing belonged to my Grandfather . He got me started in this great sport and I'm always greatful for and cherish the knowledge he passed on to me. I proudly wear his coat at times like these in his honor .I know he is smiling down at me right now.

Yeah, he does . How do you like the little "beauty mark" on his nose? That"s the third or fourth buck that I've killed with warts on their faces. BTW, I'm already having problems with critters messin with my buck hangin there. If anyone knows how to keep Magpies away, let me know . My two cats, Fat Pugs & Crosseyed Moe refuse to guard it cause it's too darn cold out. minus 4 this morning .

Yep, he must have been playing with toads !! ;D I was told years ago, that it's perfectly OK to eat the meat that came from a deer with warts... the way I just said that doesn't quite sound right, does it ?!!! ?

Great story my friend-You ever thought of calling them in?...... Thanx Foss ~ Yeah, I tried using my grunt call a couple of days ago with no results . Yesterday I briefy tried my "Deer in a can " call .. one of those calls that is shaped like a small spraypaint can that you turn upside down to play. Don't think that called those deer in either. If wasn't successful yesterday, Next week when the Rut gets going, I was going to start rattling . That might have pulled a big one in.... no need to now . I'll be ready next year, thats for sure.
