I'm back from the hunt & BT is on his way home. He should be there around 2:00 PM today. I'm happy to report that we had a very successful hunt, we got through the hunt safely and Had a marvelous time! I must say that BT is one of the best, most personable and fun guys that I have ever had the pleasure of sharing a hunt with! We generally just had a great time. However... BT had a very close "encounter with a Russian Boar of the mad kind". He escaped what could have been a very serious injury by a "dead boar running". We'll have that posted here as well! In addition to the great hunt, we have some new info on a few broadheads... One confirmation of poor flight, one other one on flight and one we discovered new design flaw in as well as new info on penetration of the same head from a conventional bow!! Between the two of us we have about 100 or so pics and a lot to share with you. The weather turned out to be perfect all day yesterday for the hunt with the temp around 70-75 degrees. As we left there this morning, BT described it to me as one of the most fun hunts he has ever been on......and I agree! A lot of details will follow, so stay tuned!

Here's BT with his.... Me with mine.... This is a pic of BT's leg where he had the close encounter. Notice the 2-3" tear in his pants leg!! The blood is from the boar... not BT. I shot it and it went after him. ;D He can tell you that story!!

I asked him if he checked his underwear!! ;D I'm not getting mine mounted..I'm gonna do an European mount. Mine had 2" cutters and I think the only thing that saved BT from a lot of damage to his leg was that the cutter on my hog that got him was that it was half broken off! He still had about an inch of it left and it was a little jagged.

Michi...it's just so indescribable! You just can't know the excitement and fun until you do it! Those hogs were wild and in stalking, you could get no closer that 25-40 yards. I'm sure BT will post the part about when the boar charged him but there was no chase on that one! I slammed the Sonic into him getting a perfect double lung hit from an elevated platform at about 16-18 yards...getting a great pass through, high and angled down and out behind the right shoulder into the rocks breaking my arrow into 3 pieces. I could see the blood trail going up the hill towards the field before I climbed down and confirmed it when I got down to look. It was a steady and medium blood trail up across the rocks and through the brush to a field about 40 yards to my rear. BT had taken a stand along the edge of that field probably another 30 yards down along the edge. At any rate, my boar was hit hard, and bleeding a lot. (for a hog) As he got to the edge of the field, BT pulled up on him thinking what a nice hog he was, then noticed the blood on the hogs shoulder and knew I must have hit him. At any rate, the boar turned his head to look at BT, and made the charge!! BT had no escape route, and nowhere to go before the hog was on top of him. After the hog tried to take BT out, he made a sharp left towards the field and only made it about 10-12 feet until he succumbed to the damage of the Sonic and dropped right there..not more than 15 feet from where he tried to get BT!! The second one I shot in the afternoon is a bit more of a story! That is "the story of the chase". If BT and I had a camera man filming, we could have had a GREAT video titled "Chasing Wild Boars". The action was almost non stop!! ;D

Well here I come stumbling into the lodge a day late ;D I was up till 1AM packing the freezer and then I had to go to work , hit my site , do another site and finally I get to relax It was definitely one of the more enjoyable hog hunts that I have been on and meeting Roger was very cool I am telling you guys!...we have got to get together and do this next year Anyway.... The area where we were hunting would have been great if there were 10+ people stalking as the noise from errant steps would have kept the hogs on the move. Think of it as a deer drive where the deer drive back! ;D Since it was only the two of us and the under cover was so brutal we took stand locations and let the guides beat the brush in the swamp to get the pigs moving. Once the guides got down in there , some pigs did move out towards us and you could hear them making their way over all the shale rock from time to time along with the grunting. In the first hour I saw 3 and then I heard a major heavy weight making it's way up the slope below me. There was to much brush for me to see and I didn't have time to look so I just ran toward the approaching ruckus , trying to intercept it at the fields edge. At the right time , I stoped behind a fallen tree top that projected into the field and drew as a large pig broke out of the tangle. I just happened to catch (out of the corner of my eye) the limb of my bow and I saw that it would hit that tree limb if I were to let go , so I steped out around it and thats when the hog came to a sudden stop and swung it's big head toward me. Before I could think about the shot it came straight around and with it's head to the ground it shot at me The 20yrd. shot was now 5yrds and I didn't have the presents of mind to hit the trigger on the release and instead threw myself towards the tree limb as a squirrel might try and leap away from a tractor trailer while crossing the center line ;D I don't really know how the bow remained in my hands or how the arrow didn't get released and I still don't know what happened in that respect but what I do know is that your average 240# hog can grow to nearly 3X's that size in some circumstances ;D ;D Fortunately my pants were light weight summer wear and they gave way pretty easily to the ivory that caught them I turned on that hog like captain Quint did on Jaws when it was about to inhale him on the rear deck of his sinking boat ....alot of words and none of which were fit for a forum. Fortunately I couldn't breath at the moment so none of them were uttered ;D Having given me the business on the charge I turned in time to see him try to come back around hard towards me but his legs folded and he bit the dirt as a three foot shot of blood and foam shot out of his side. He kept it up long enough to turn the green grass to a bare spot of earth about 6" round and then expires. All the while I stood there not 10" from him...in total awe of my good fortune that lockmaster had also mastered his shot placement. Had it not been for that perfect shot the boar would have had more in him and I would have had less of me on the return trip After this , it was my turn and the guides were getting tired from pulling themselves through the mess below so ( on their insistence ) I took to a stand. It was not too long and they had a few breaking in my direction with a decent one in the middle of the pack. I drew the Browning once again and by pure luck , the one I wanted stoped in the only opening through a jungle of vines. The arrow was off and so was he , with my arrow sticking well out and waving like a flag. I didn't expect a pass through with this old warrior but this was kinda fishy looking all the same I figured I'd be fine with a one lung shot but that was not to be The broadhead had deflected on the 1/4ing shot and the arrow had run on top of the ribs , between the hide and was lodged in the base of the neck....far from any artery's Now I was in deep trouble But!....I did have a secrete weapon Lockmaster had already proved to be a killer and that Hoyt was very capable of a good long range shot ...so we took off on the mission of recovery. I'll let LM tell that part but in the end he did me right and re-claimed my pig for the freezer

And now..."the rest of the story... The mission of recovery was to be more than a short chase. I was in nearly the same spot as BT had been when he was "assaulted" by my big hog. (except I had planned an escape route where I was on watch. ;D) The pigs were on the way from down in the bottom at the swamp. I heard the clanking of hooves on the rocks and the faint grunts from the hogs beginning to get aggravated by being chased around. As the sound of the pigs got closer, my heart began to speed up as I knew they were near. All of a sudden 4-5 of them came up the hill from where BT was on watch and they were definitely in a hurry. I watched as they ran across the field towards the briar patch/schumack thicket on the other side. I watched as they were crossing the field and all of a sudden herard...."whooooosh" from BT's direction. I knew it was the browning! The pig came up out of the woods, and into and across the field about 40 yards from me with 2/3 of the the arrow jutting up from his ribcage. I watched but no sign of any weakness on the pigs part. No sign he was hurt although from my vantage point, it looked like it had been a good hit! Anyway, I watched the pig with the protruding arrow disappear over the horizon towards the briar thicket. As BT and the guides came up to the field I told them it looked like a good hit but the pig wasn't "acting like it was". We looked briefly but found no blood! We all headed towards the thicket and spread out looking for him when all of a sudden he appeared at the far end of the field moving back down towards the swamp. For the second time, the guides went down to roust him out. I noticed that both times he moved through the same general area between the swamp and the briar thicket at the other side of the field. For the second time, the pig came up out of the swamp, across the field and headed for the briar patch. We crossed the field again, headed for the briars. Suddenly the guide spotted the pigs down in the briars. We walked along the field watching the briars looking for the one with the protruding arrow. The guide suggested that BT go down into the thicket to a specific area and they were going to drop in at the far end and once again try to push the pigs towards him. As BT walked back through the field to find his spot, I walked along and stopped at a point in the field where there was a slight "ditch" running from the thicket towards the swamp side and took a stand about 20 yds from the "ditch". I had no more taken up my position when the guide came down along the field and motioned me towards him as he looked down into the briar patch. I walked over and the guide said he's standing down there and pointed. I looked and saw the pig with the protruding arrow...standing near the edge of the briars at about 30 yards! I raised my bow, pulled back and just as I was getting him lined up on my 30 yard pin, two other big hogs stepped up even and on the other side of him! Crap....I said to the guide. I held at full draw for about a minute as they stood there like statues! All of a sudden they got spooked by something and they all took off at one time heading for the far end of the field and back again down the hillside towards the swamp! Once again, the guides said they would go down and try to chase them back up. BT walked with them and I heard them all talking way down in the bottom. I hurried to find a position as BT had told me to take the shot if I got it. As I walked out the side of the rocky hillside, I looked ahead and in a short distance away, I saw a rocky "cliff like" area overlooking the bottom. Knowing I was the only one up there, I needed to find a spot where I could get the most coverage and the best opportunity for a shot in different directions if it presented itself. I headed towards the rocks. When I got there, I found a "flat rock shelf" extending out of the cliff which was about 20 feet above the bottom and found I could see nearly 50 yards in most directions. I had no more than reached the "shelf" and took a stand when I heard the clanking of hooves below me in the distance. I heard one of the guides say they were heading back up. Here they came.....4 of them running to my right at about 40 yards. Then here came 4-5 more with a couple of piglets. All of a sudden I saw one of them carrying what I was looking for....BT's arrow. As he got to about 40 yards, I noticed he was headed right towards me at the base of the rocks. I pulled back and waited while keeping a close eye on his direction of movement. He got to about 30 yards and the the hunters dream.....he turned to his left slightly, walked a few steps and stopped right on top of a flat rock at 25 yards at a slight quartering away. I saw BT's arrow sticking out the opposite side! I set the pin where I wanted it to hit and cut it loose. I didn't even see my arrow until it hit him up in the ribs where I wanted to hit to get the downward angle for the kill. It would have been the perfect senario for a neat video!! KER-THUMP.....at the same time I actually saw the arrow, it was only for an instant until the vanes disappeared into his rib cage. He just jumped a little, ran out along the rocks for about 15 yards on the side of the hill and fell into a little "bowl" and I saw him kicking a little! By this time I heard BT and the guides right down below me! I yelled.."He's down..I got him! By the time they got up there, the hog had expired. I had gotten a great downward angle double lung shot at 25 yards...and he only made it 15 yards after the hit. That chase was now finally over. It had lasted for about 3 1/2 hrs.
