"my girlfriend/wife wants to trying hunting and I dont know what broadhead would be best"
Well this might not seem as complicated as "what should I get my wife for her birthday" but it deserves the same attention ;D
As we all know , the object is to get that head in there and make a quick human kill
With lower poundage bows (that are generally associated with the fairer sex) , the fact that the head is strong and sharp is not the only factor.
The lack of Resistance is key for this shooting.
Multi blade and mechanical heads can be (can be , but not my reccomendation)used but they offer the one thing you dont want which is resistance
Think of it this way....what good is all that x-tra cutting surface if it is going to prevent the head from getting in there in the first place.
Getting in isent the only thing...getting through would be better
Anyway...
For Maximum penetration a 2 bladed head is the best option.
Now out of all the two blade heads , there are many which would fit the bill perfectly.
Some of my personal favorites are the Magnus Stinger & Muzzy Phantom
The cut on contact head (such as the ones above)offer the least resistance compaired to a trocar/chisel tip although a trocar could be chosen as a very good second choice.
Now for the good news!
I know that some of you have that look on your faces about the thought of a lesser blood trail but lets look back at our equipment
The lower poundage bow is slower and more than likely in the 190 - 220 f.p.s. range.
Do you know what this means!
We can now shoot a super large head (comparitive) since windplaning is not the concern it was for us big macho types shooting 290f.p.s.+ ;D
My recurve shoots around 170 and I could affix a hub cap to the front of my arrow and still hit the target.
So...now we can start looking at heads like the Simmons (as long as we can keep the F.O.C. to the 10 - 14% range.)
Heads that are 1 3/16" (or better) in a 2 blade design still offer less resistance than a 3blade at 7/8th of an inch plus there is no wedge effect due to multipul blades on the ferrle.
With all that said...at 50# we can start looking into the 3blade head design with cutting dia's not exceeding 1" if possable.
A good choice (IMO) would be the Wasp Boss bullet or the Muzzy.
I hope this helps when someone stops by with an intrest and as I said before....Not THE way... just MY way
